Obituary for Carmen Rita Daly

Carmen Rita Daly, 91, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the wee hours of Wednesday, August 2, 2017.

Carmen was born on October 27, 1925, in Kitty, Georgetown, Guyana, West Indies. In April 1969, she was wed to Richard Daly and they both lived in Guyana until 1978 when they moved to New York.

Carmen studied to be a teacher and taught English, shorthand and typing in Guyana for many years. After arriving in New York, she volunteered and was then hired at the P.S. 155Q Elementary School. She attended Yok college and completed studies to become a paraprofessional. She worked there for 21 years until her retirement in the year 2000. After her retirement, she then volunteered there until 2011 and was affectionately known as “Grandma Daly” by the children at the school. She also worked at a home for disabled children on a part-time basis.

Carmen loved to read and could always be found with a book in her hand. She was well liked by many and had a host of friends.

In December of 2016, due to her failing health and inability to independently care for herself, she relocated to Orlando, Florida to live with her daughter Idalia and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren that also lived there.

In addition to her husband of 48 years, Carmen leaves to mourn two daughters: Idalia Maxwell and Cassandra (Jacqueline) McAndrew. Five grandchildren: Aubrey Spooner, Rosalind (Maxwell) Clark, Egan Spooner, Lyndon Maxwell, and Andre Riley, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
