Obituary for Marjorie N. Smart

Marjorie Nadene (VanDyne) Smart, a resident of Clermont, Florida since May 2012, passed gently and peacefully in the early afternoon of August 4, 2017, two days after celebrating her 96th birthday of August 2, 1921. Marjorie lived in Irving, TX from 1971 until arriving in Florida after rehabilitating from her first broken hip in 2012. She lived her faith in God and was a life-long “giver” to others including working in churches and missions she and her husband answered the called to serve. She was born in Cherryvale, Kansas to Alexander Hurd and Etta Leona (Malcom) VanDyne. On April 13, 1945, Marjorie married World War II Army Air Corps Flight Engineer Harold Marvin Smart (d. 2009). She worked as a PBX operator prior to the couple starting their family of three children: Timothy Joseph (d. 2008) of Irving, TX; Ronald Eugene of Clermont, FL; and Teresa Suzanne Fowler (d. 2009) of Irving, TX. She is also survived by son-in-law Robert Fowler, Irving, TX, and daugthers-in-law Janine (Stull) Smart, Irving, TX and Deborah (Johnson) Smart, Clermont, FL. She had ten grandchildren: Stephanie Smart Lyle (d. 2015), Oklahoma City, OK; Christopher Smart (and wife Jenny), Afton, OK; Jason Smart, Weatherford, TX; Tory Smart, Oklahoma City, OK; Jennifer Rachael Fixico (and husband Jake), Farmington, NM; Samuel Dylan Smart, Norman, OK; Jessica Breanne Burke Smart, Clermont, FL; Sara, Matthew and Emily Fowler, of Irving, TX. Marjorie has four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She loved family and friends and always found time to help and encourage others. Primarily a homemaker and church-worker, especially with nurseries and young children as a Sunday School Teacher, she worked as a secretary for Mistletoe Express and later sampled food at Irving area grocery stores. Marjorie kept in touch with friends and family by writing letters and sending cards frequently – so often that the postman who delivered mail to her assisted living center knew her well. She was a Bingo expert and loved her daily, and nightly, games of Dominoes. She became an avid reader of mystery novels and discovered new talents as she began to create artwork at the age of 91. She wrote poetry throughout her life and was known for her one and two line quips, which she wrote nearly every day through her 95th year. Marjorie loved talking to everyone, including her assisted living friends, about her extended family and friends. Winter Oaks Funeral and Cremations in Winter Garden is assisting the family. A Celebration Of Life Memorial Service will be held at Village Baptist Irving, 224 E. Grauwyler, Irving, TX 75062, Attention: Marjorie Smart Celebration of Life. Service date to be announced. Marjorie will join her husband at the Dallas - Fort Worth National Cemetery.
