Obituary for James H Spurgeon

James Spurgeon, known to friends and family as “Tex”, passed away at the age of 93 on Thursday, December 19, 2019, at Cornerstone Hospice in Ocoee, Florida, after a long illness.

He was a long-time resident of Orlando & Ocoee, Florida. Tex was born in Nacogdoches, Texas on October 20, 1926 and came from a large family.

He served his country proudly in the U.S.A.F. In WW II. Shortly after being discharged, he met his wife, Rose Ellen Sherrod and they married on July 5, 1949 and settled in Central Florida.

He enjoyed a long and successful career in Data Processing with the City of Orlando and later began a family-run business, Central Florida First Call with his sons Jim and Pete in 1989.

Tex was known for his kindness and compassion for others as well as his sense of humor and was well-loved by those in his community, and by many friends and family members.

He is predeceased by his loving wife Rose Ellen and is survived by his two sons, James Hiram Spurgeon ll of Farmington, New York and Peter Spurgeon of Pomona Park Florida; his four sisters, Virginia Cook, Anna Laura Rogers, Ruth Fox, Betty Porter and brother, Darius Spurgeon, all from Texas; and his loving companion in his later years, Damaris “Midge” Murray. He is also survived by his beloved pal and pet, his cat Rascal. Services will be at Winter Oak Funeral Home, in Winter Garden, FL. The family has asked in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cornerstone Hospice in Ocoee, FL.
