Obituary

Grant Thomas Powell, 24, of Plano, Texas recently passed away unexpectedly in Mascotte, Florida. He was attending the University of Central Florida in Orlando as a National Merit Scholar and was anticipating graduating with his bachelor’s degree in Communications in December 2020.

Grant was born on September 15, 1995 in Kettering, Ohio, the younger son of Lance Powell and Zen-Hsiu Emily (Chen) Powell.

Grant was always a kind and gentle soul, who was concerned with the environment, and often donated his time and money to charitable causes. He was a member of the Normandy United Methodist Church in Centerville, Ohio, then the Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, and had continued a strong interest in God and spirituality, including Divine Truth, and God’s Way Ltd.

Grant was an enthusiastic and highly ranked chess player while growing up and was member of Boy Scout Troop 261 in Plano, where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout and completed a two-week wilderness trek at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He graduated at the top of his high school class, and later was on the Dean’s List while at University of Central Florida.

In addition to his parents, Grant’s loving family also includes his older brother Mitchell Powell at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, his grandparents Lee and Jane Powell of Dayton, Ohio, Joy Powell of Birkenhead, England, and Wen-Shi and Xiu-Feng Chen of Taiwan. His aunts and uncles include Gregg and Donna Powell of San Antonio, Texas, Terry and Rae Metz of New Carlisle, Ohio, and Mr. and Mrs. Peng-Wei Chen, Mrs. Bi-Hong Chen, Mr. and Mrs. Jun-Cheng Chen, and Mr. and Mrs. Dong-Yang Chen, plus nine first cousins, all of Taiwan.

Grant was cremated and a touching funeral service was guided by the Reverend Dr. Gloria Louise H. Stephens on January 13, 2020 at the Winter Oak Funeral Home in Winter Garden, Florida. In lieu of sending flowers, the family suggests honoring God and Grant’s memory with a donation to Divine Truth (https://www.divinetruth.com/sites/main/en/index.htm#welcome.htm),
God’s Way Ltd (https://blog.godsway.net/), or your Church of choice.

Grant’s arrangements are in the caring guidance of Winter Oak Funeral Home and Cremations.

Mitchell,, Emily and Lance, Sam and I remember Grant as a quintessential Scout, and a kind, caring and polite young man. One who would do any task asked of him willingly and without complaint. One who would help others accomplish their own tasks. One who was wise beyond his years, and whose character will forever define him as a wonderful person. He was a joy to know, and a wonderful leader of other young men. His leadership as Crew Leader at Philmont helped us get through the trek and enjoy our time together. Grant made a lifelong and lasting impression on me, and on Sam. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to you in your loss. YIS, Jamie & Sam Schell

Dearest Grant,

I know you are surely in heaven now with God’s Love to sustain you, and I hope you have already found peace, comfort and happiness with Him. I also want you to know always, how much Emily, Mitchell and I loved you, and always will.

I am so very truly sorry from my heart that we failed to recognize the degree of pain that you were in that caused you to leave us so early in life, and that we didn’t find a way to do even more to help you.

We are so happy, honored, and proud to have you as a son and brother in our lives. Beautiful and kind soul, Eagle Scout, National Merit Scholar, Friend, and our Teacher well beyond your years, you fulfilled and completed our lives in ways you probably never imagined, and you have our unending gratitude.

I know you are in a better place now, and I pray that as you continue to receive God’s Love, that your soul will grow in love, knowledge, and happiness. I hope you will watch over us from time to time, smile with us, and visit us in our dreams whenever you like.

I look forward lovingly, when each of our times come, to the days when we can meet and be with you again, and embrace in Love.

Love to You Always, Dad

Dearest Grant,
I love you very much, more than you could have imagined. You were always such a sweet boy, loving, kind and generous. You had a soft heart for people who were not as fortunate, so you gave them money and your belongings while you didn’t have much yourself. You were so very kind to me too and never forgot to show your appreciation even for the little things I did for you and I know you were the same to others.
It was so sad to see you suffering such an unspeakable amount of pain and stress, but I didn’t know how to help you in those times even though I tried to do what I thought was the right things to do. Now that you are gone, I think back, and I realize that there were so many opportunities that I could have helped you, but I didn’t. I didn’t tell you how special you are to us, how much I love you just the way you are, how loving and generous you are, and how much I admire your strength and work ethics.
I am very sorry I didn’t take you for a trip to visit my family in Taiwan so you could get to see and meet the other half of your heritage. You would have seen how accepting people are in those parts of the world. You were such a unique and special soul Grant; I wish we had a lot more time with you in this world, and I know I will join you sometime in the spirit worlds.
Grant, you were, and you are the star of my life, my hero and my teacher. I can never thank you enough for introducing me to Divine Truth and Divine Love. I know you learned about the spirit worlds from Jesus and Mary and I know you will desire for God’s Divine Love and ask brighter spirits to help your soul progress. I would like to say this prayer with you Grant:

Our Father, Who is in Heaven, We recognize that You are All Holy and Loving and Merciful, and that we are Your children.
GRANT knows that he is the greatest of Your creations, and the most wonderful of all Your Handiworks, and the object of Your Great Soul’s Love and Tenderest Care.
GRANT knows that Your Will is that GRANT becomes at-one with You and partake of Your Great Love which You have bestowed upon him through Your Mercy and Desire that GRANT becomes, in truth, Your child through Love.
We pray that You will open up GRANT’S soul to the inflowing of Your Love, and that then will come to him Your Holy Spirit to bring into his soul Your Divine Love, in great abundance, until his soul is transformed into the very essence of Yourself; and that there will come to him faith – such faith as will cause GRANT to realize that he truly is your child and one with You in very substance, and that You are his Father, the bestower of every good and perfect gift.
Let Grant never cease to realize that Your Love is waiting for each and all of us, and that when GRANT comes to You, in faith and earnest aspiration, Your Love will never be withheld from him.
Keep GRANT in the shadow of Your Love every hour and moment of his existence, we thank you for Your Love and the privilege of receiving it, and GRANT believes that You are his Father – the Loving Father who smiles upon him in his weakness, and is always ready to help him and take him into Your Arms of Love.
I pray this with GRANT with all the earnestness and sincere longings of our souls, and, trusting in Your Love, give You all the glory and honor and love that our finite souls can give.
AMEN

Also, Grant, I want to thank you for coming to my dreams to let me know you and Max are in a happier place, that’s so very loving of you, and the song “I can see clearly now” that you played for us in Chili’s.
