Obituary for Grant T Powell

Grant Thomas Powell, 24, of Plano, Texas recently passed away unexpectedly in Mascotte, Florida. He was attending the University of Central Florida in Orlando as a National Merit Scholar and was anticipating graduating with his bachelor’s degree in Communications in December 2020.

Grant was born on September 15, 1995 in Kettering, Ohio, the younger son of Lance Powell and Zen-Hsiu Emily (Chen) Powell.

Grant was always a kind and gentle soul, who was concerned with the environment, and often donated his time and money to charitable causes. He was a member of the Normandy United Methodist Church in Centerville, Ohio, then the Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, and had continued a strong interest in God and spirituality, including Divine Truth, and God’s Way Ltd.

Grant was an enthusiastic and highly ranked chess player while growing up and was member of Boy Scout Troop 261 in Plano, where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout and completed a two-week wilderness trek at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. He graduated at the top of his high school class, and later was on the Dean’s List while at University of Central Florida.

In addition to his parents, Grant’s loving family also includes his older brother Mitchell Powell at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, his grandparents Lee and Jane Powell of Dayton, Ohio, Joy Powell of Birkenhead, England, and Wen-Shi and Xiu-Feng Chen of Taiwan. His aunts and uncles include Gregg and Donna Powell of San Antonio, Texas, Terry and Rae Metz of New Carlisle, Ohio, and Mr. and Mrs. Peng-Wei Chen, Mrs. Bi-Hong Chen, Mr. and Mrs. Jun-Cheng Chen, and Mr. and Mrs. Dong-Yang Chen, plus nine first cousins, all of Taiwan.

Grant was cremated and a touching funeral service was guided by the Reverend Dr. Gloria Louise H. Stephens on January 13, 2020 at the Winter Oak Funeral Home in Winter Garden, Florida. In lieu of sending flowers, the family suggests honoring God and Grant’s memory with a donation to Divine Truth (https://www.divinetruth.com/sites/main/en/index.htm#welcome.htm),
God’s Way Ltd (https://blog.godsway.net/), or your Church of choice.

Grant’s arrangements are in the caring guidance of Winter Oak Funeral Home and Cremations.
