Obituary for Vera Edwards

Vera Jean (O’Hern) Edwards (December 21, 1929 - April 21, 2020) was born a coal miner’s daughter in Nanticoke, PA daughter of William O’Hern and Hester Marie Poore. She was the youngest of four children. She graduated from Newport High School in 1947.

After graduation she came to Bloomsburg, PA to study hair dressing at Ja’Mel Beauty College and that’s where she met Pauline “Gramma” Edwards who offered her a room at her house since her boys were away in the service.

When Gramma’s son Jack W. Edwards returned from the Navy that’s how she met up with her husband to be. Edwards’ Restaurant was on the New Berwick Highway and Jack and Vera helped out in Del and Pauline’s restaurant and lived in the apartment above on the second floor. Then they found a house across the swamp on Fairview Avenue by the Tennis Club and Legion Post 273. The restaurant became Hud’s and the bake shop opened on the corner of West and Main. And then in 1963 the family teamed up and started Gramma Edwards’ Fair Stand at the Bloomsburg Fair.

Vera worked at Carrie’s Beauty Shop on Third St. and then in her remaining Bloomsburg years at Rea and Derick’s Drug Store at the then new shopping center on Route 11.

Jack started his career as a Plumber’s Helper with Coomb’s Plumbing and then took a job with Merck in Danville, PA. In the late 60s Merck offered Jack a position at the Albany, GA location and they sold their house and moved to Georgia in the summer of 1969. Upon Jack’s retirement they moved to Ocala, FL.

In Albany Vera enjoyed working at Krispy Kreme and after Jack passed she volunteered for Hospice of Marion County for many years in their thrift shop. They were residents of Spruce Creek North in Ocala.

Vera’s passing was preceeded by her husband Jack in 2001, her parents, brothers Floyd and Bunce and sister Betty. She is survived by her son Jack and his wife Peggy of Conroe, TX, daughter Jill of NYC and daughter Jody and her husband Ted Price of Windermere FL.

Vera loved helping others. She was always there to assist a friend. She loved gathering groups for activities like a bike ride, swim at the pool, and a nightly card game. She was an avid reader and accomplished in sewing, knitting, crochet, quilt making, and needlepoint. She enjoyed furniture restoration. She always had a project going.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Humane Society are appreciated to honor her love of her pets.
