Obituary for Jean Mellow Sjuggerud

Jean Mellow Sjuggerud, 76, of Orlando, Florida passed away on June 6, 2020 due to complications from pancreatic cancer.

“Well Mom, you better get that bucket list out and get to work,” her son said the day she was diagnosed. “I filled my bucket a long time ago with your dad,” she replied. And it is true…

Born Beverly Jean Mellow in Orlando, Florida, Jean was raised here with her brother Ronald. She went to Boone High School, and she was a Delta Gamma at the University of Florida. She had a long working career as a teacher, guidance counselor, and real estate professional. After a few moves with the Navy, Dave and Jean settled back in Orlando for good to raise kids.

She met the love of her life David Sjuggerud when she was a schoolteacher in Jacksonville and he was a Navy test pilot. They married in France, and truly experienced much of the world together. Europe, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Iceland, Argentina, New Zealand, and more. They stayed happily married until Dave’s death, over 40 years later.

Jean loved spending time with her brother Ron and the entire extended Mellow family. She also dearly loved her childhood friends from Boone High School, who remained close friends for generations, until her final day. The list of close family and friends is wide… the extended Sjuggerud family, Navy friends, sorority friends, club friends, the list of people she touched goes on and on.

Jean is survived by her sons Stephen (Kathryn) and Michael (Jema), and her grandchildren Zackary and Delaney.

A small family service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery where Jean will be eternally reunited with her husband.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, a donation to the Dave & Jean Sjuggerud Memorial Scholarship Fund at http://cfdunncounty.org/give/donate/ is encouraged.
