Obituary for William Alfred Burns

William Alfred Burns, 77, of Ocoee, FL passed away peacefully at his home on July 31, 2020.

William was born on September 24th, 1942, in Altoona, AL. He was in the middle of six siblings to parents James Derris Burns and Ruth Estelle Carnell. He grew up in Alabama with his parents and siblings until he enlisted in the Navy. He chose engineering as his career, he was a mechanical engineer and went on to become a Nuclear Engineer. After serving in the Navy for 24 years, he retired as a Master Chief Naval Officer, which was the highest enlisted grade. After retirement, he wanted to continue to serve and chose to join American Maritime Officers, after another 20 years had his second retirement. During his 44 years of service to our country, he was awarded with; Medal of Honor, Navy Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Medal, (3) Good Conduct Medals, (2) Navy Expeditionary Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (with 4 bronze stars), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal (with device), (2) Sea Service Deployment Ribbons and (4) Battle “E” Ribbons.

He loved to fish, loved music, loved working on cars and motorcycles. He also grew his own fruits and vegetables. He had a great ear for music and taught himself how to play the guitar and piano. He loved to play for his family and friends. He was always ready to tell a good joke along with share some great stories. He had a heart of gold and would be the first to lend a hand to anyone who needed it.

He was predeceased by all 5 of his siblings, his son Kevin Derris Burns and his grandson Daniel Logan Roa. He is survived by his wife: Ana Lucia Burns, daughters: Melody Burns, Cindy Burns Contino and son Preston Lamar Burns. 7 Grandsons, 4 Granddaughters and 7 great grandchildren.
