Obituary for Samuel Curtis "Sam" Astley Jr.
Samuel Curtis Astley Jr, 78 of Indianapolis, IN; Noblesville, IN; Stuart, FL and Winter Garden, FL, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Orlando Health at Health Central in Ocoee, Florida with his loving family by his side.
Sam was born on March 26, 1944 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is the son of Samuel Curtis and Viola Astley. Sam was the loving husband of 48 ½ years to Sandra Kay (Adams) Astley.
Besides his loving wife, Sandra, he is survived by his three children, Michael Canzian, Amy Astley and Anjelica Menossi, his sister Sally Gregory and her husband, Nick, his grandchildren Luca, Sienna, Ethan and Gabriella, his children-in-law Beatriz Canzian, Troy Menossi and Mimi Snow and many nephews, nieces and cousins. Sam was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara, his parents, and his other beloved family and friends.
He was as kind, moral, and full of goodness as they come, loving his family and friends, and loving a good laugh. He taught those around him to assume the people around them are inherently good; he taught this with actions, looking people in the eye, holding doors for a stranger, and offering a smile.
Sam grew up loving motor boats, racing them up and down his beloved White River, and competing in amateur boat races in his youth. He also loved running his cabin cruisers, Pipe Dream I & II, on the Ohio River. Sam loved IndyCar, having attended 67 consecutive Indianapolis 500 races.
Sam was the co-owner of Sullivan & Poore, a commercial mechanical contracting company for Indianapolis landmarks including the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indiana World War Memorial, Indianapolis Children’s Museum, Indianapolis Zoo, Monument Circle, the State Capitol building, hospitals, schools, and courthouses. He loved his profession, and often family vacation photos would be intermingled with snapshots of plumbing and HVAC systems from the various places visited on any trip or adventure.
Sam was an avid reader of history, particularly of World War II, and showed a deep respect and admiration for all those who served our country. Drafted for the Vietnam War, Sam reported for duty, only to be told his combination of wool and food allergies made him “too much trouble.”
Sam Astley was a graduate of North Central High School, took business classes at IUPUI and graduated from a five-year apprenticeship with the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union where he won best apprentice award in an Indiana statewide contest in 1967. Sam was a founding member of the PHCC of Indianapolis, a non-profit trade association, that represents professional plumbing, heating, and cooling contractors. Sam was also on the board of the Local 440 Mechanical Contractors Association Apprenticeship Committee.
Sam was a member of the White River, Windjammer, and Rising Sun Yacht Clubs, serving on the boards of the first two. He was a member of Port St. Lucie Power Squadron. Sam was also a member of MCA (Mechanical Contractors Association), served as President in the early ‘90s and received the Distinguished Service Award in 1997.
