Obituary for Victor Sirbu

Victor Sirbu, 85, of Dr. Phillips, FL, finished the adventure of a lifetime on September 1, 2022, with his friends and family deep in his heart, and his characteristic charm still bringing smiles to those fortunate to have just met him.

Victor was born on August 17, 1937, in Chisinau, Romania. Growing up under the hardships of an oppressive government, he developed a deep spirit of freedom and generosity within him – one he proudly carried his entire life and was always happy to share with others, whether through his inspiring and captivating stories or his eagerness to offer a helping hand or two, asking nothing in return.

It was this spirit that drove him to qualify for the 1964 Olympic Games in Modern Pentathlon and risk his life to immigrate to the United States, where he would find the love of his life, Winifred, on a sunny afternoon in New Jersey. Neither one could have known at the time that they would be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 27th, 2022.

Victor’s resourcefulness and determination kept him busy as a successful technician, engineer, and manager and brought him and his family to Florida in 1983. But it was his competitive and cooperative nature that had him swimming the 9 miles across Lake Hopatcong, winning a mountain of medals in US Masters Swimming, enjoying the thrill of Ironman competitions, and even showing off his physique in his first bodybuilding competition at age 72. When he wasn’t working or competing, he was expressing his artistic talent in painting and a variety of home projects, creating memories with his family, and building special bonds with every animal in the yard.

He will be profoundly missed, not only by the friends and family that he loved and that loved him, but by a world always in need of a friendly smile and a kind word.

His beautiful bride and greatest cheerleader, Winifred Sirbu, his eternal pride and joy and only daughter, Danielle Zepess, and his son-in-law, Josh Zepess, who held a place of great pride and admiration in his heart, continue forward in honor of his life and legacy.

A celebration of his journey will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. All friends, family, and community are welcome to join us at Winter Oak Funeral Home at 1132 E Plant Street, Winter Garden, FL 34787.
