Obituary for Harvey Raymond Clayton

Harvey R. Clayton was born in Brielle, NJ, to Elizabeth and Stanley Clayton. They later moved to Brick, NJ. Harvey grew up in Brick and attended Point Pleasant Beach High School, where he met and later married Barbara J. Hurley.

After high school, Harvey joined the US Coast Guard and served on the USS Campbell. After the Coast Guard, Harvey began work for NJ Bell Telephone, where he stayed until retirement.

Following retirement, Harvey worked for Van Hise and Callagan Funeral Home.

Harvey was a devoted and beloved dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He and Barbara attended every concert, baseball game, and track meet. He loved hockey games for grandsons Michael Parks and Alex Clayton and recitals for Kyle Parks and Anna Clayton.

Harvey was a proud member of the Point Pleasant Beach First Aid Squad for 15 years, serving one year as their president. He answered most of the “calls” on nights and weekends because he worked for NJ Bell during the day. He wanted his family to know that it was important to help others.

Harvey and Barbara lived in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, for 40 years and, after a quick five years in Amherst, MA, moved to Jensen Beach, FL, where they lived their retirement years.

In retirement, Harvey took up more volunteer work. He spent several years helping with boat tours at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in Ft. Pierce, FL, and then as docent at The House of Refuge Museum in Stuart, FL. In earlier years, Harvey loved hunting and fishing. In retirement, he loved golfing, boating, but mostly going out to breakfast.

Harvey is pre-deceased by parents Elizabeth and Stanley Clayton, sisters Phyllis Batzel and Barbara Gant, beloved wife of 56 years, Barbara (Hurley) Clayton, and son-in-law George N. Parks. He is survived by his brother John S. Clayton and wife, Linda, son Robert J. Clayton and daughter Jeanne Clayton Parks, grandchildren Kyle Parks, Michael Parks and wife Stephanie, Alex Clayton, Anna Clayton, and great-grandchildren Luke Parks and Hadley Parks. We’ll all miss the corny “dad” jokes, the creative ways of fixing things, the constant support, the painting help, the ready advice, and a million other things.

A Celebration of Life will be arranged later Spring 2023.

Harvey's funeral arrangements are in the caring guidance of Winter Oak Funeral Home & Cremation,
